Some facts about teen depression

 

Teens and depression
According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, as many as 1 in 33 children and 1 in 8 adolescents may have depression. Depression is highly treatable and early diagnosis and treatment are essential for youth with depression. Depressive disorders can affect a young person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. 

 

 

Symptoms of depression in youth include:

Persistent sadness and hopelessness

Withdrawal from friends and activities

Increased irritability and agitation

Missed school or poor school performance

Changes in eating and sleeping habits

Indecision, lack of concentration, or forgetfulness

Poor self-esteem or guilt

Frequent physical complaints

Lack of enthusiasm, low energy, or low motivation

Drug or alcohol abuse

Thoughts of death or suicide
