Shepherd of the Valley's All-Church Musical
February 23 & 24, 2008

"The Race"
was Shepherd of the Valley's fourth
all-church musical. We produce one approximately every 18 months.

“The Race” is written by Jay Beech, a Minnesota Lutheran musician and composer.

In his notes on the musical, Jay Beech says:

Simple living is at once both simple and complex. It may be simple for you to choose from among alternative remedies for the bothersome or irksome elements of your life. “Right” or “wrong” can be easily described as the choices Dave must make in this musical.

But under this simplicity lies the complexity of causes and effects, the web of relationships in which you live, the conflicting desires you have for your life. Those complexities make “simple living” into something suddenly difficult, suddenly dangerous, or suddenly illusive.

On the far side of complexity, though, lies another kind of simplicity, the one compelled by your living through the difficult choices and paying the consequences and reaping the rewards of those decisions.
