A Devotion for Your Day
by Randy Brandt
"John the Baptist said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said.
John the Baptist had a great way to catch people's attention and stir them up: he borrowed this quote from the Old Testament, "Make straight the way of the Lord!" He shouted.
Using our words, he might have shouted, "Get your ducks in a row; Cross your t's and dot your i's; be prepared with the whole enchilada!" What I mean is, John the Baptist was saying that God was doing something new and each person should be fully prepared to be part of it. So don't be caught asleep; instead, be awake and ready to participate in God's new activity here on this earth.
During our weeks of Advent, "make straight the way of the Lord" is an encouragement for us to "open up a path for the Lord" in our lives as we get ready to celebrate God's coming in Jesus. Our preparations for celebrating Christmas should be focused on Jesus. Our expectations for hope and new life are found in the real presence of our Emmanuel Jesus, God with us.
We come Lord Jesus, as advent guests.
Open our hearts that we might be blessed.
And as we soon celebrate your birth,
May your love and peace fill all the earth. Amen.
