A Devotion for Your Day

by Sam Heiting

Psalm 125

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, from this time on and forevermore. For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, so that the righteous might not stretch out their hands to do wrong. Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts. But those who turn aside to their own crooked ways the Lord will lead away with evildoers. Peace be upon Israel!

Have you ever experienced a situation where you trusted someone and they disappointed you or let you down? Perhaps it was a best friend, your spouse, a child, a parent, or a work associate. It is likely this has happened many times throughout your life. Psalm 125 is often called the 'trust' Psalm. In Psalm 125, verse 2, I especially like this phrase, 'so the Lord surrounds his people'. I think this means we can always trust God. While others may disappoint, or be at their worst, God will remain our constant. The simple act of trusting in God centers us and brings us inward stability.

Lord, may your presence remind us always of your steadfast love and that we can place our trust in you. Amen.
