A Devotion for Your Day

by Merilu Narum

2 Samuel 6:12-19

Now King David was told, "The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God." So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets.

As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart.

They brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the LORD. After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD Almighty. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes.

"David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets."

David was filled with joy as he brought the ark of God to Jerusalem. He rejoiced that the presence of God would be among the Israelites, just as Jesus was born to live among us. David was like a child filled with awe and wonder. This story reminds me of some of my most precious memories from when my children were young. I witnessed the joy and excitement they felt when Christmas was coming. The lights on the tree would sparkle in their eyes, and their delightful anticipation for our Christmas celebration was infectious. Advent is our time to anticipate the arrival of the baby Jesus. We prepare our hearts for new life and new faith, just like our precious children. It is so easy to get caught up in all of the details, the stress of preparing meals, the struggle to pick the "perfect" gifts. But it is so incredibly important to remember that God's love is the real gift and that we should share this gift with all of our might. So dance for joy with the knowledge that God sent His only son to live among us, to teach us, and to share His gift of love with all of His beloved children.

Dear God, inspire us to feel the joy of this holy season in our hearts, and to share that joy with those around us. Amen.
