A Devotion for Your Day

by Duane Paetznick

Luke 1:28-29

"The Angel Gabriel came to Mary and said: 'Greetings favored one! The Lord is with you.' But Mary was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be."

In this passage the Angel Gabriel comes to Mary to let her know about her pregnancy. This unexpected event, no doubt, was a crisis for Mary. No wonder she was "much perplexed."

Like Mary, you may be in a time of difficulty or crisis or pain. How would those words from Gabriel sound to your ears?

Believe it or not, those words are true. You are a "favored one." You are favored by the grace of God who, because of Jesus, sees you as a beloved person. You are someone who is accompanied throughout your life by God's presence in the Holy Spirit.

I'm sure it took Mary a long time to fully understand that profound greeting Gabriel gave her. And it may take you a long time too. But that greeting is true. And it's something to "ponder" this Advent season.

Oh Lord, sometimes we don't feel like favored ones. It's at those times when we ask that your Spirit's presence might give us reassurance of your love and concern for us. In Jesus name, Amen.
