A Devotion for Your Day

by Kirsten Levorson

Luke 1:13

But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John."

"Your prayer has been heard." It must have been a miracle.

When SOTV members visit our Tanzanian friends in the Makifu, Tungamalenga, and Usolanga Parishes, much of what we see and hear is a miracle. When the Mpalapande Primary School was dedicated last July, Pastor Paulo told us it was a miracle to have this beautifully constructed modern school building in a village where most other structures are built of twigs, grass, and mud.

When the partnership collaborated on a pipeline delivering water to the village of Mahove, the matriarch of the village told us this was a gift from God, that now girls could go to school and women had more time to tend their crops instead of spending much of the day carrying water from far away.

A young man who was abandoned by his mother, raised by his elderly and very poor grandmother, received a scholarship for a university education and became a community development worker. Recently he sent money to his home village congregation, enough to pay for most of the corrugated metal sheets that roofed the new chapel building. Pastor Madembo noted that this answered prayer became possible only through our common faith in Jesus Christ.

Loving God, thank you for these gifts of grace. As we wait for the coming of your Son, open our eyes so we see your miracles. Amen.
