A Devotion for Your Day
by Linda Nelson
And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, and they said to him, "By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?" Jesus said to them, "I will ask you a question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men? Answer me." And they argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?' But shall we say, 'From men'?"-they were afraid of the people, for all held that John was a real prophet. So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
When I read this passage, I can identify with both the priests and Jesus. I know given a tough question or situation, I want to say "I don't know" and let the grown up handle it. But then I realize that I am that grown up and people may be looking to me to answer it.
As a parent, we want our children to just trust us and do things "because I said so." It seems that Jesus is feeling the same way. But He shows us that we may need to give the questions back to our "kids" and see if they can come to a conclusion first. Jesus lets them feel the complexity that humans have made of these difficult questions, then finally bids them to trust that he is doing what God has told him to do.
In this time of Advent, we are waiting. Just like the priest and scribes are waiting for Jesus to answer, we are waiting for the birth of Christ. We need to remember that waiting is not a problem, but a gift. It is a way to let go of the burden of figuring everything out quickly, and giving it to God. He wants to be your partner and carry your burdens.
Dear Lord, In this season of Advent, help us to slow down and listen to the whispered answers that You give us. Help us to lean on you by trusting that You will help us to answer the hard questions. Amen.
