Join us on Saturday mornings for a group book discussion on "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander. This book discusses how our criminal justice system has led to mass incarceration (a quintupling of the number of persons incarcerated each year) in the United States since the 1970's.
While emphasizing how mass incarceration impacts African-American males and their families, Alexander also notes that the discrimination faced by African-American males is prevalent among other minorities and socio-economically disadvantaged populations. Alexander's central premise, from which the book derives its title, is that "mass incarceration is, metaphorically, the New Jim Crow."
This book discussion is sponsored by the Racial Truth and Justice Committee.
