The decision of what age to begin taking Communion needs to be made by each family. Many families find that 5th grade is a common starting point for being ready. Shepherd of the Valley recognizes that each child develops uniquely and many are ready to participate in the Lord’s Supper in worship with their family at differing ages, from Pre-K to middle school.
Children accompanied by at least one parent or guardian are required to attend a one-night Communion preparation experience, on one of the dates above. This one-night class (about 60 minutes) is a shared parent/child experience to support readiness for this holy sacrament. There is discussion time, a role-playing skit, tasting of the bread and wine, and prayer, along with the answering of children’s questions.
