Tiny Try-It-Out: Water + Word

What a miracle it is that ordinary water – when combined with God’s word—becomes a mysterious and powerful Blessing: the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Explore how God showers us with love that gives faith, identity, and purpose.

Parents, use your own discretion when it comes to your kids. If content is rated for certain ages then we will indicate that. Enjoy!

Pause, light a candle, & take 15 minutes for caring conversation and prayer.

Share: What were your high and low points today?
Read: John 4:14: “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Reflect: Remember a time when you felt really thirsty. How did it feel to finally get something to drink?
Pray: “Dear God, when we are “thirsty” for forgiveness, comfort, joy, love—help us to turn to you for life-giving water. Amen.”
Bless: Trace a cross on each other’s shoulder, hand, or head and say “[Name], you are a beloved child of God.”

Going Deeper

  • Splash, sing, and bless. Change the words to a familiar tune, and sing it as a blessing as you
wash in the tub. Use a cup to pour water and remember how God’s love washes over us at bath time and all the time!
  • Bookmark your bible with stories of Baptism. Read about Jesus’ Baptism and follow the prompts on the Baptism Bookmark to capture memories of your own baptism day.
  • Water Bingo. At an upcoming family gathering—maybe even a celebration of a baptism or
baptismal anniversary—experience God’s love by getting to know something new about the
people you love! Find someone to sign each square to get a row across, down, or diagonal.
  • Work together to complete the Road Trip Water Challenge. The next time you travel, keep an
eye out for all the evidence of water you can spot along the way! To add another element to the challenge, ask each person in the car to name one way water is used. Keep going, round and round. Get at least 20, and go for more if you can!

Be wowed by Joseph Herscher’s Human Car Wash. How could you build your morning routine to include an automatic “water + word” reminder that you are God’s child, forgiven and loved?

Sing or sway along with Cynthia Liggins Thomas’ recording of the African Spiritual “Wade in the Water.” Watch to the end for notes on connections between this song, The Underground Railroad, and the bible!
