What to Expect
Terminology, how to be an ally, and space for Q&A.
In celebration of National Coming Out day, you’re invited to join this friendly, safe, and judgment free space for adults at any stage in their learning journey to grow their knowledge and acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community.
All are welcome to attend. Bring the questions you’ve been afraid to ask. We’re here to help. There will be a system for us to answer anonymous questions during the presentation.
- Tips on how to be an ally.
- Brief, general LGBTQIA+ history in the United States and Minnesota.
- An overview of terminology.
- A walkthrough of sexuality, biological sex, and gender.
- Tools for using and understanding personal pronouns.
- Time for open Q&A, including a system for anonymous questions.
Facilitators
Zenda Olson (she/they) is the communications & program assistant at Shepherd of the Valley, and she has held the role since December 2025. Zenda has a background in English literature and diversity and inclusion, working in academic writing/publishing and corporate communication roles prior to SOTV. They hold three years of global LGBTQIA+ advocacy group leadership experience, which includes facilitating online workshops, producing learning materials, conducting interviews, coordinating Pride Month events, and providing leadership in LGBTQIA+ spaces.
Julie Opheim (she/her) is the connect ministry coordinator for Shepherd of the Valley. She believes in the welcome statement of SOTV and is working on building skills to make her more authentic and welcoming to the LGBTQIA+ community. Julie has over 26 years of experience working at Shepherd of the Valley, mainly supporting the full scope of Adult Ministries. Her background includes working with the Racial Truth and Justice group to create educational opportunities to help others learn. She has also completed the intercultural development inventory (IDI) and continues to work on understanding cultural differences.
