What to Expect

In this 8-week Bible study, we will explore Jesus’ surprising vision of blessing. Through time spent in Scripture, discussion, and honest reflection on our own stories, we’ll seek the Spirit’s guidance to recognize the truth that, even in seasons of suffering, we are blessed.

The Beatitudes in Matthew 5 are among Jesus’ most beloved teachings — and some of the most puzzling. How can the poor, the grieving, or the persecuted be called blessed? We want to believe his words, yet they often seem to contradict our experience.

But the Beatitudes are not a puzzle to solve — they are a mystery to live. As we journey with Christ, we begin to discover that God’s blessings often appear in the places we least expect.

Facilitated by Charlie Ortloff, spiritual director and retired pastor, whose insights come from decades on his own spiritual journey. Classes are highly conversational rather than lecture-based. Through large- and small-group discussion, biblical and contemporary stories, spiritual practices, poetry, and gentle humor, participants will engage the material in meaningful ways. Ample time will be provided for thoughtful reflection and interaction with both Charlie and fellow participants.
