Tiny Try-It-Out: Praying in Color

Praying in color is an invitation to pray in an active and playful way. It is both a process and product. The process involves a re-entry into the childlike world of coloring and improvising. The product is a colorful design or drawing that is a visual reminder of the time spent in prayer.

  • Use this Calendar Template to draw or color a square each day as you pray for someone or something.
  • This Squiggle Drawing provides a great place to start with a creative prayer: doodle in each section as you pray!

Ideas for Grandparents

Consider these ideas for Praying in Color that you can incorporate into your own unique circumstances:

  • As a regular caregiver for little ones: Talk about loved ones while you finger paint together. “What color do you pick for Cousin Henry? He loves yellow!” “I’m painting a heart for aunt Susan. She is sick – God, please help her feel better.”
  • At a special family gathering: Set out a calendar with the name of each person written on a day of the current/upcoming month. Ask them to add one word or phrase as a sort of prayer request (e.g. “friends,” “college decision,” or “I want a dog”) for you to include on that day when you pray for them.
  • From a distance: Gather your holiday cards, with photos and annual updates from family and friends, and use them to guide your prayers! Pick a card each day and say a prayer for that person or family.
  • With older grandkids: Gift them with a “praying in color care package” – gel pens or colored pencils, paper, and a clipboard. Find other ideas to get you started here.
