Grandparent Tiny Try-It-Out: Read and Reflect

Reading and reflecting on scripture is a practice we do with our sight, our minds, and our whole body! You can use these Bible Bingo cards to read, talk, and move your way through scripture—using either the traditional Bible texts, or the stories found in the Spark Story Bible. Try for a “blackout” by Christmas!

Ideas for Grandparents

Consider these ideas for Reading and Reflecting on scripture that you can incorporate into your own unique circumstances:

  • With little ones: Read from the Spark Story Bible or another children’s bible, which includes pictures and questions for reflection that are geared toward the younger set.
  • At a special family gathering: Display the fragile family heirloom Nativity set out of reach – but have a Little People or other kid-friendly (i.e. durable) set accessible to play with and help act out the story of Jesus’ birth as you tell or read it.
  • From a distance: As an early December “Advent gift,” mail a Christmas picture book that tells the story of Jesus’ birth for all ages to enjoy through the season.
  • With older grandkids: Download a Bible app on your phone, and encourage your grandchild to do the same – or text them a verse on occasion that really speaks to you (and share why).

How will you read and reflect on scripture with those you love?

Telling the Story, with Playfulness and Heart

The late Barb Schulz (“Bubba” to her grandkids) wanted to be sure that the next generation knew the true meaning of Christmas. And so she wrote a script, Grandpa Rolf built the set, and every grownup played a part – in full costume.

Bubba narrated as an older, wiser “Mary” – using mementos to tell the story of Jesus’ birth while aunts, uncles, moms, and dads acted it out for the audience of six cousins. Everyone had heard the story before, probably many times – but no one will forget what it looked, sounded, and felt like to be part of the story that day.

It was a memory-making labor of love: grandparents’ love for family and love for the Lord.
